Along with the Gift-Along

The 2015 Gift-Along is now over half way through, but there's still almost another three weeks of crafting time left before the big New Year's Eve party that closes it all.
So far I've completed eight GAL projects of my own, with one more still on the needles. That's three hats, a bag, two hippos and two light sabres (and a more surreal project list I haven't made before!). I'm almost halfway through a pair of socks, with hopefully a second one planned before the GAL is over.

However, among all the thousands (and I mean thousands) of GAL-eligible patterns, there are plenty more that have caught my eye for various reasons that I want to mention here, even though I won't make them for now myself.

The first is this gorgeous shawl, Frozen Fractals, by Kimberley Golynskiy (80 skeins on Ravelry). The shape of it really caught my eye. I haven't seen a shawl shaped like this before, and it looks like it will stay on easily as well as being beautiful.

Next up is the Woodsprite hooded coat by Heidi Atwood-Reeves (mightcouldknits on Ravelry). It's a really cute little jacket, and I especially like the button detail on the back, but I just don't have any little girls to knit for at all. I have sons and nephews.

The next design I want to feature here is another shawl. The Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-shawl by Lotta Groeger (Atalante on Ravelry) looks just like a regular triangular lace shawl, until you look at the point and find the spider knitted there! Unfortunately that's the reason I wouldn't make it myself as I'm terrified of the little blighters, but if you're a lover of creepy-crawlies, you could do worse than this arachnophilic knitwear!

And finally, there's a cowl. When I think of a cowl, I think of a loop scarf, but this beautiful accessory takes the cowl to a new level of warmth. Gilraen's Cowl by Raven Knits Design has a polo necked collar extending into a pretty lace shoulder piece which can tuck underneath an open-necked coat and keep the cold winds at bay. Who said a practical item can't also be a pretty one?

Which unexpected beauties have you spotted in the Gift-Along? Which do you have on your needles right now?! And who is going to find them underneath the Christmas tree?
